Educational Therapist loves the benefits of unschooling

Jean Nunnally

Nicole Connell M.Ed is an Educational Therapist who offers a holistic and innovative approach to help students struggling with:

• academics • learning differences • neurodiversity • confidence • overwhelm • stress • self-esteem • school

A self-proclaimed “over-achiever” in school, Nicole now finds herself leading students on their own personalized learning journey and loves the benefits it brings – both to the students and to herself. Here are Nicole's words:

“Sometimes I have moments where I wonder how I got here. Like today. I found myself sitting in a beautiful backyard eating delicious waffles (the Care bears were invited too of course) to celebrate the first day of "school" for an amazing teen that I get to support. The first day of her new homeschooling journey was so special! I have to pinch myself when I think about how I get to help design and co-create personalized educational experiences where there is:

· Space to imagine and create.

· Space to go at just the right pace.

· Space to nurture areas of brilliance and support tricky areas.

· Space to recover from past negative learning experiences.

· Space to do the things that light you up.

· And space to be who you are.

I never planned on doing this kind of work but I absolutely LOVE it.

As someone who was an "overachiever" in school, it surprises me that I now help families who want to leave the school system. I help them create something totally personalized that can meet their child where they're at.

Five years ago this work found me when I started working with an incredible preteen. It became clear that there was no school in the area that would work for her. I ended up supporting her on an unschooling/homeschooling path and we created an education together just for her. It has been one of the most amazing and meaningful experiences of my life.

Turns out, she was not the only one looking for help creating a new path forward. When what is out there isn’t working, homeschooling and/or unschooling can be a much better fit for some. It can be scary to forge a new path ahead but the beautiful thing that I keep seeing is that the new path is so much more amazing than we could have ever imagined it to be when we first started. I mean, look. It’s Care bears eating waffles and it’s only the first day!”

Success Without School is the story of two children who grew up without imposed curricula, classes, or school. Instead they were allowed to follow their interests and to do what children do best: learn through play.  The results were children who never lost their enthusiasm for learning, exploring, and discovery.

The book answers the questions that Jean was frequently asked over the years:

  • What is unschooling?

  • Why did you decide to do this?

  • Were you homeschooled?

  • How do you get them to learn?

  • What about socialization?

  • Did they have friends?

  • What about math/chemistry/physics/etc.?

  • How do they get into college?

With humor and honesty, Jean Nunnally explains how the path began and how she navigated the challenges along the way.
